New Year's Day evening, my husband and I were sitting on the couch when he asked me what my New Year's Resolution was. I thought for a moment and said "well, I haven't really given it much thought to be honest. What about you?" He then proceeded to name quite a few, which in turn made me think "I know there are a few things I'd like to accomplish or change in the coming year, I just need to sit down and write them out!" After thinking and jotting some down in my journal over the course of the next few days, those "few" turned into 18! Don't worry I'm not going to talk about all of them, just the ones I feel are most pertinent and relate-able to others.
These are in no particular order but I would like to start with the one I feel we ALL can relate to. You see, last year at this time i had a brand new baby and setting goals for a year that I really had no idea of how was going to go, was not a thought; I was just taking each day as it came and learning along the way. With that being said, on to the resolutions.
1. Take Time for ME.
Whether it be time in the morning before the baby gets up to sit and enjoy a cup of coffee-alone, or time at night after he goes to bed. There's a saying that if you are no good to yourself, how can you be of good to others? I wholeheartedly agree with this; and just so y'all know, I believe that EVERYONE needs "ME time", not just moms and dads! We all need some time to relax, gather our thoughts and get our shit together. Or sit with our friends and just vent! Ya hear me?!
Anywho, If I get too tired, stressed or just plain fed up, the last person I need to take things out on is my innocent baby. Before becoming a stay at home mom, I really did not understand how much "work" it entailed. Yes you are home all day and yes it's wonderful and extremely fulfilling but you really don't have an exorbitant amount of time to yourself like some think. My day begins and ends with taking care of other living beings: my child and my two dogs so basically three children lol. When the baby is napping, I try to get house chores done and play with the dogs because let's face it, they haven't exactly gotten as much attention since baby came along. Then there's cooking dinner, cleaning up, then getting baby ready for bed. Thankfully I have a husband who will pick up the slack and do the more in depth cleaning like wiping down window seals and cabinets because I've been taking care of a miniature version of a drunk adult all day and I just might not have time to get to those damn blinds that need dusting. Anyway, my favorite way to relax is probably pretty common among women but I love a good late night bubble bath with a glass of wine and a good aromatherapy candle! 2. Complete A Yoga Challenge.
I suppose if I wanted to I could count this as my "me time" but I am going to try to start my day early with this! My sweet yogi friend sent me this 30 day challenge. Won't you join me?
3. Live In the Now!
This one is super important to me. I am one of those people who loves to be busy and look forward to all the family gatherings, parties, basically anything fun that happens on the weekends and holidays. When they're over I legit get super sad; I get it honest though, my mom is the same way. After the holiday season this year I was really bummed out. I think it was mostly because my baby turned one on Christmas Eve so it was even more bitter sweet. With that being said, I'm going to stop living for the next event and start learning to enjoy the everyday joys more. Time is going by WAY too fast and I don't want to look back and forget that my baby learned to climb up his slide by himself on that random Wednesday morning or our days spent playing at the park. Don't get me wrong though, I'll still look forward to my girls' brunches and any and every party because who doesn't love a party? I also like to stay focused on the little things by writing in my journal to Maddux. I began this journal as soon as I found out I was pregnant. I love the look of this one I bought at Target.
4. Stop Comparing My Life to Others.
Can we all please just stop this right now?! There is always going to be someone with a newer car, or who takes lavish vacations all the time or whatever, just stop trying to keep up with the Joneses and looking for happiness in material things or how many "likes" you've gotten on your social media accounts. The lives you see posted on-line can be far from reality. We live in such a hyper-connected world that we tend to lose sight of the things that truly make us happy. And let me tell you, you're not going to find happiness because you got that new Range Rover or went on a shopping spree at Saks, not true happiness anyway. My sister recently introduced me to this podcast by Shawn Achor who offers great advice. He discusses how to find true happiness in the things around us in every day life. It addresses depression as well but I feel is relevant to this resolution, just listen!
5. Less Cell Phone Time At Night.
Every evening after I've put the baby to bed, I take my seat at the opposite end of the couch as Michael and then we proceed to sit with our faces in our phones only exchanging funny memes or dumb videos we come across while simultaneously "watching" whatever sporting event or show is on tv. What the hell?! I'm vowing to spend at least one hour several nights of the week with Michael doing something that's fun, productive or mentally stimulating. I understand that some times we just want to veg out but it's gotten a bit ridiculous. I thought about this and came up with a few suggestions! 1. Play a game such as Mancala. This is a fun two person game that we have been playing since we've been together; usually while drinking copious amounts of wine;) But it can be fun any night of the week! You can obviously play any game but we really enjoy this. 2. Talk about your goals/plans for the week and what you can do to help the other reach those goals. It's also a great way to be in-the-know with your spouses schedule to avoid a "i had no idea you were doing that" argument. I am a very visual person who likes a good planner and I have this new Sugar Paper Spiral Agenda on the way and I'm too excited! But for my husband, we have a shared calendar on our phones. 3. Put a puzzle together! We've literally never done this but it legit is something I want to do. 4. Take an evening stroll around your hood. Once it gets warm this will be an activity we will do with Maddux and the pups. 5. Watch a movie or binge watch a show you've been wanting to check out. We usually have movie nights every Friday and it's something I always look forward to! Except for those times when it takes us thirty minutes to decided on something lol
6. Get Back to Reading!
I used to read ALL the time. When I began my nanny job, the family I worked for had the entire Harry Potter series, I read every single one. I then began what would turn into my favorite series of books ever! I LOVE a good crime novel and this series by Joe Nesbo is phenomenal. There are eleven, and I read them all, so good! I also read the Steig Larsen trilogy, also great reads! I would love to read something outside the realm of crime novels and fiction, so whatta ya'll got?
7. Get Back to Volunteering.
I began volunteering at this amazing non-profit organization Kate's Club of Atlanta after completing a college internship here. Kate's Club helps children who are grieving the loss of a sibling or parent. I last went when I was pregnant and haven't had the chance to get back but now that Maddux is older I will for sure be back ASAP. 8. Learn A New Hobby.
I haven't quite thought about what I want to do but couldn't leave this list at seven because it's an odd number and I'm weird like that.
